U.S. stocks edged higher Friday as technology companies and banks rose. The Standard & Poor’s 500 index closed above 2,500 for the first time as stocks had one of their best weeks this year.

On Friday:

The Standard & Poor’s 500 index climbed 4.61 points, or 0.2 per cent, to 2,500.23.

The Dow Jones industrial average advanced 64.86 points, or 0.3 per cent, to 22,268.34.

The Nasdaq composite jumped 19.38 points, or 0.3 per cent, to 6,448.47.

The Russell 2000 index of smaller-company stocks finished up 6.69 points, or 0.5 per cent, to 1,431.71.

For the week:

The S&P 500 rose 38.80 points, or 1.6 per cent.

The Dow added 470.55 points, or 2.2 per cent.

The Nasdaq gained 88.28 points, or 1.4 per cent.

The Russell 2000 surged 32.28 points, or 2.3 per cent.

For the year:

The S&P 500 is up 261.40 points, or 11.7 per cent.

The Dow is up 2,505.74 points, or 12.7 per cent.

The Nasdaq is up 1,065.35 points, or 19.8 per cent.

The Russell 2000 is up 74.58 points, or 5.5 per cent.
